一提起学习，连我们村二大爷都知道反动分子孔老二说过：“学习了压迫劳动人民的思想，要时时刻刻复习，这样不是很快乐吗？”

一、汉字源流

《说文解字》没有“學”字，很奇怪吧？看来古人之间也并不总能达成一致，说文是西汉许慎编的，居然不收《论语》的第三个字，也太不给于丹面子了。不过，许慎纵然敢对圣人默然，却不敢对第？代领导人无视，所以我们看到如下解释：

習 習 xí 數飛也。从羽从白。凡習之屬皆从習。

此处的“白”读做(zì)，许慎认为是会意字，可小徐认为（不是徐若萱，而是南唐的徐锴）这是个形声字，段注从之（此段不是是段皇爷，而是段玉裁）。

郭沫若研究了甲骨文后认为“此字（甲文)分明从羽从日，盖谓禽鸟于晴日学飞。”

郭老除了在诗歌戏剧方面独领风骚之外，在历史、文字学、考古学方面也屡有惊人之语。例如，他曾作诗，起手就是“井冈山，革命母胎盘”；他也曾考证“士”在甲骨文里为男根。如此倒也对仗工整。

“学习”一词较早出现在《史记-卷六，秦始皇本纪》“士則學習法令辟禁。” 《红楼梦》第四十八回：“如今要成人立事，學習著買賣，又不准我了。”

二、英语词根

虽然英语里“study”和”learn”都有学习的意思，但是，study似乎跟汉语里的含义更接近一些。

在线词根辞典是这样解释的。

study (v.) c.1125, from O.Fr. estudier “to study” (Fr. étude), from M.L. studiare, from L. studium “study, application,” originally “eagerness,” from studere “to be diligent” (“to be pressing forward”), from PIE *(s)teu- “to push, stick, knock, beat” (see steep (adj.)). The noun meaning “application of the mind to the acquisition of knowledge” is recorded from c.1300. Sense of “room furnished with books” is from 1303. Study hall is attested from 1891, originally a large common room in a college. Studious is attested from c.1382.

这是一连串的语言因果链条。

做为动词的study是从【古法语】estudier来的， estudier来自【中世纪拉丁语】studiare， studiare来自【拉丁文】studium，“研习，应用” 原始的含义是“迫切、急切、渴望”， 此义来自studere “成为勤奋的”（或者“向前推进”）， 来自【古印欧语系】*(s)teu- “推，粘，敲，击打”。 作为名词的study意思是“根据知识的要求把心（mind）派上用场。”（注意，此处是指：用心，而非用脑。） 上述用法从1300年开始。

下面是更可信的《牛津英语大词典》（OED）的解释

OED [a. OF. estudie masc. (later estuide, estude masc. and fem., mod.F. 閠ude fem.) = Pr. estudi-s, estuzi-s, Sp. estudio, Pg. estudo, It. studio, ad. L. studium, zeal, affection, painstaking, study, related to studUre to be zealous, seek to be helpful, apply oneself, study. The etymology of the L. word is obscure: for conjectures see Walde.] ?. In certain senses of L. studium (chiefly in translations from Latin): Affection, friendliness, devotion to another’s welfare; partisan sympathy; desire, inclination; pleasure or interest felt in something. Obs.

study这个词几乎遍布主要欧洲语言的词汇表 【西班牙语】 estudio 【葡萄牙语】estudo 【意大利语】studio 源自【拉丁文】studium “热情，爱意，忍受疼痛，研习” 关联词是“ studUre” “成为热情的，寻求成为有帮助的，把自己应用在，研习” 【拉丁文】studium，还有某种意义，那就是：爱意，友善，为了他人的好处而投入；有选择的同情；欲望，倾向；对某事的兴趣和快乐。

三、小结

“学习”这个词，无论在汉语还是西语里，都有一致的地方。

在中国，用学飞的小鸟做比喻，指一次次地尝试，一次次地练习。

在西方，这个词指满怀热情、忍受疼痛、向前推进，反复研习，为了把心派上用场。
